The 5 Spring Plumbing Mistakes I See London
Homeowners Make Every Year
Every year, without fail, spring arrives… and so do the same plumbing callouts across London.
You’d think winter would be the worst of it…frozen pipes, cold weather, all the obvious risks. But in reality, March and April are when I see the most avoidable plumbing problems in people’s homes.
Not because the issues are sudden, but because they’ve been quietly building over time.
I’ve worked in properties all over London, and there are a handful of mistakes I see homeowners make every single spring. The frustrating part is, most of them are completely preventable.
Here are the five I’d tell anyone to watch out for.
1. Ignoring a “Slightly Slow” Drain
This is easily the most common issue, and the one people dismiss the quickest.
A sink or bath that’s draining a bit slower than usual doesn’t feel urgent. But from my experience, that’s often the first sign of a developing blockage.
By the time we’re called out, it’s usually gone from “slightly slow” to fully blocked, with water backing up or unpleasant smells coming through.
The worst culprit in most households? Hair. If anyone in your home has long hair, you’ll know the struggle… hair loves to gather in plugholes and shower traps. You may be removing it regularly inside the house, but here’s the thing: many homeowners completely overlook the outside drains. Leaves, hair, and debris can accumulate over winter, and by spring these external drains are often backed up and smelly.
Spring tends to make slow drains worse. There’s simply more usage… more showers, more cleaning, more demand on your plumbing system.
If a drain has changed, even slightly, it’s worth acting on early. In my experience, it never resolves itself.
2. Turning Outdoor Taps Back On Without
Checking Them
As soon as the weather improves, outdoor taps go back into use – watering gardens, jetwashing patios, cleaning cars.
But winter can quietly damage external pipework and fittings, even if nothing has visibly frozen.
I’ve seen plenty of cases where everything seems fine on the surface, but there’s a slow leak behind the wall, causing damage that isn’t spotted until weeks later.
Before using your outdoor tap regularly, take a moment to:
Check for drips or moisture around connections
Make sure the pressure feels consistent
Keep an eye on nearby walls for any signs of damp
It’s a simple check that can prevent a much bigger repair.
3. Treating Spring Cleaning Like the Plumbing Can Handle Anything
Spring cleaning is great for your home, but it can be tough on your plumbing.
This is the time of year when we start attending more blocked drains caused by things that were never meant to go down the sink in the first place.
Grease, food waste, coffee grounds, wipes, and general debris all contribute to build-up inside your pipes. It doesn’t always cause an immediate problem, but over time, it restricts flow and leads to blockages.
A few weeks after a big clean, that’s when issues tend to show up.
As a rule, if it’s not water, soap, or something specifically designed for your drainage system, it’s better kept out of it.
We used specialist thermal imaging to locate a ceiling leak below the radiator, lifted the flooring, replaced the faulty pipe section, refilled the system with corrosion inhibitor, and tested it to ensure the heating was working properly.
4. Assuming “No Leak” Means “No Problem”
Not all plumbing issues are always obvious.
In reality, some of the more serious problems we deal with start as things you can’t see:

Check for drips or moisture around connections

Make sure the pressure feels consistent

Keep an eye on nearby walls for any signs of damp
By the time visible signs appear (like damp patches or reduced water pressure) the issue has often been developing for a while.
If something feels slightly off, it’s always worth paying attention to. Early leak detection is one of the simplest ways to avoid more extensive (and expensive) repairs.
5. Waiting Until It’s Urgent to Call a Plumber
This is the one that turns small issues into emergency plumbing callouts.
I completely understand why people delay, no one wants to deal with plumbing problems unless they have to. But spring has a way of pushing minor issues to the point where they can’t be ignored.
What could have been:
- A routine repair
- A quick drain clean
- A simple fix
…quickly becomes:
- A blocked system
- Water damage
- An urgent call for an emergency plumber
Most of the time, these situations didn’t start as emergencies, they just weren’t dealt with early enough.
Why Spring Is the Right Time to Act
From my experience, spring is the point where hidden plumbing issues start to show themselves.
Your system has been through months of colder weather, and now it’s being used more frequently again. That combination tends to expose weaknesses, whether it’s in your pipework, drainage, or fixtures.
The good news is, most of what I’ve mentioned here is preventable with a bit of awareness and early action.
